With the issue of Male' City Council granting permission to create a Baibalaa (local sport similar to kabaddi) practice ground in Maafannu Cemetery receiving public outrage, the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works has now set up a practice ground in the Usfasgandu area.

Male' City Council started clearing the Maafannu Cemetery in September last year. The cemetery, of 36,153 sqft was cleared with plans to build a parking building at the location.

However, last week, photos on social media showed a baibalaa practice area built on the Maafannu Cemetery land. This met with severe public outrage, describing it as a disrespect to those who had been interred there.

Each year, baibalaa practice arenas are set up in various locations around Male' in preparation for the Baibalaa Championship that is held during the Fitr Eid holidays.

With the practice arena on Maafannu Cemetery being later removed, the ministry has now built a practice arena to replace this in the Usfasgandu area.

The ministry said that the their Public Works unit had commenced the work on Tuesday under the advice of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
