A total of 3,159 parties have requested to pay MVR 254 million under a schedule to settle expatriate payments and associated fines, the Ministry of Homeland, Security, and Technology said yesterday.

This includes MVR 188 million in work permit fees, MVR 63 million in quota fees, and MVR 2.7 million in cancellation fees.

A 12-month period has been granted for these payments to be cleared.

So far, the Homeland Ministry has suspended 7,500 individuals from using the Xpat system due to unpaid fees and penalties.

Currently, there are 139,000 expatriate workers in the Maldives who have been issued permits, but only 36 percent of fees are paid regularly. To encourage compliance, the ministry has released details of companies that have failed to pay their expatriate related fees, including the names of several prominent businesses in the Maldives.
