The Parliament has decided to call in the management of Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation regarding the loans taken for the development of flats, which are now causing financial losses to the government due to delays in handing over the apartments.

The issue was raised by north Galolhu MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu). In the letter addressed to Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Ibrahim said that the state budget is paying MVR 23.4 million monthly for the loan taken from India for the 4,000 flats being developed in the second phase of Hulhumalé.

He also detailed that if the finished 744 flats and commercial units are handed over, the state would be able to earn MVR 10.8 million per month.

Although the recipients of the flats have been determined, Ibrahim wrote that the delays in collecting rent and fees is due to the government's probe into the legitimacy of the flat recipients lists.

While the government would be able to repay the loan from the rent and fees, Ibrahim also said that the repayment process is being carried out at a significant loss for the state due to the government's negligence as well.

Highlighting that he wishes to clarify why this is happening amidst a housing crisis in the country, Ibrahim requested FDS's management be summoned to the parliament's newly minted Housing Committee.

Housing Minister Dr. Abdulla Muththalib recently apologised over the prolonged delays in handing over the 4000 flats promised under the Gedhoruveriyaa Scheme.

According to Muthalib, the government’s current intention is to verify the flat list of 4,000 flat recipients announced by the previous government and issue a final list instead of evaluating the all 20,000 forms submitted for the Gedhoruveriyaa Scheme.

The list will be released before Ramadan, he said.
