According to Slovak-Canadian computer scientist Andrej Karpathy, Maldives is second to none when it comes to the perfect environment for software development. He shared this with his fellow developers at the GPU MODE 2024, with first hand experience after a software he developed amidst the serene calmness of Maldives' night skies caught global attention.

Andrej said that the Large Language Models Compiler (llm.c) was born in Maldives from an idea that came from within the silence of a sleepless night. He immediately began working on the project, and described it as a dream that came true.

LLM softwares are computational models that recognises language and gathers information from it. Much like ChatGPT which has gained popularity around the world, LLM software computes and presents information when a user enters a query.

However, Anrej's llm.c facilitates bringing small changes to LLMs easily, and requires little memory space, easily able to be used on smaller memory devices as well.

Andrej, who previously worked as the Director of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Auto Pilot Vision at Tesla said that the idea came to him while sitting outside his vacation villa in Maldives, after waking up at one in the morning and unable to go back to sleep.

He detailed how the entire software was developed in Maldives, and how he would work from 01:00 am to 07:00 am in the mornings on a water villa porch and why he recommends to develop softwares this way. He also shared how he would enjoy water sports activities after working on the software.

According to him, it was the natural beauty and the silence around him, that made it easier to work on the software.

At GPU MODE 2024 held during the last week of September, Andrej shared how llm.c came about, its features, and the challenges he faced while developing it. He also spoke about further developing the software and making some changes.

Andrej shared that the purpose of the project is to make it easier and more efficient for people to use larger language models.

While Andrej, who is amongst the top 100 most influential people in the artificial intelligence scene, talks about his experience developing the llm.c, the story comes with Maldives as a recommended location to develop softwares.
