The Maldives government confirmed the decisive victory of opposition coalition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) over incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
This marks the first time the government acknowledged the opposition candidate’s electoral triumph.
According to the formal results revealed by Elections Commission (EC), Solih won the election by a total of 134 616 votes at 58.4 percent while incumbent President Yameen received 96 123 votes at 41.6 percent.
This year, EC confirmed the eligibility of 262 135 voters in the country, out of which a staggering 89 percent showed up at the ballot boxes.
The preliminary results for the election revealed that atolls across the Maldives, with the exception of Meemu (Mulak Atoll) and Faafu (Northern Nilandhe Atoll) Atoll, voted in favour of Solih, and the opposition coalition.
A statement was released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs quoting EC’s official results, announcing the majority triumph to the international community, with added assurances towards a peaceful and constitutional transfer of government.
In its closing, the Foreign Ministry affirmed that the concluded election was in fact, a free and fair process.
