As part of a USD 53 million project to digitise health centers nationwide, Vice President Faisal Naseem presented various equipment, including tablets and computers, to five regional hospitals, 15 atoll hospitals, and 163 health centers.
The Ministry of Health has highlighted that the project to digitise health centers is the largest IT infrastructure and digitalization initiative undertaken in the health sector to date. Through this project, a significant number of devices have been provided, including 608 computer systems, 44 laptops, 500 tablets, 14 video conference systems, and 551 printers.
The Ministry highlighted that this support would address digitisation challenges faced in the atolls and enhance accessibility throughout the Maldives. Additionally, the ministry emphasised the expansion of the primary health care initiative from Faafu Atoll to encompass the entire nation.
During the ceremony, the Vice President shared his firsthand experiences of assisting during previous epidemics and highlighted the challenges faced within the health sector. He spoke about the difficulties in maintaining a proper patient database in the atolls and the challenges of follow-ups between doctors and patients, noting that in the past, the only resources available were pencils, pens, papers, and walkie talkies.
Vice President Faisal shared his experiences, noting that in the past, they had to venture to the outskirts of the island to obtain a signal for communication. However, he expressed his satisfaction with the progress made in the health sector and the improved ease of facilitation. He highlighted the significance of digitising the health sector, emphasising that it would provide a comprehensive solution for patients.
The Vice President said that the digitalisation of the health sector was the foundation for its future progress. He remarked that without a proper implementation of an IT structure, achieving this progress would not be possible.
VP Faisal highlighted the crucial role of IT infrastructure in driving the future of the health sector, enabling healthcare training and the widespread dissemination of awareness programs. He further explained that the digitisation efforts would facilitate healthcare training sessions for professionals in the industry and the implementation of awareness programs to reach larger audiences.
