National Disaster Management Council has passed the Maldives Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy 2024 - 2030.
The Council is chaired by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, with Minister of Defence Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel and senior officials of National Disaster Management Authority participating.
The President's Office said that this six year plan was endorsed in a council meeting held yesterday at the President's Office.
The Strategy aims to protect the national and built environment, homes and property against climate hazards and other disasters. It further aims to achieve disaster preparedness, build resilient communities and achieve sustainable development goals.
This was formulated in the focus of strengthening the Maldives' global advocacy in risks posed to SIDS through climate change.
The endorsement of this strategy aligns with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, which requires signatories to increase the number of national and local disaster risk reduction strategies by 2030, the President's Office website states. The Sendai Framework was endorsed by the UN General Assembly following the 2015 Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction.
