Salaries of government employees make up about 40 percent of recurrent expenditure, and 28 percent of total budget.
Of State expenses, 70 percent is on recurrent expenditure. This year's budget has an allocatio of MVR 14 billion for government salaries.
The proposed budget for 2025 has an allocation of MVR 500 million to harmonize pay of civil servants and employees in the judicial sector. This could result in higher spending on salaries next year.
Next year's budget also has MVR 14 billion allocated for salaries of approximately 50,000 employees of various government institutes. This includes 30,000 civil service employees. The remaining 20,000 are employees of independent institutions and political appointees.
