President of The Democrats, Hassan Latheef, has today resigned from his position.
"I resigned because I believe it is very important at this time," he told Mihaaru News.
After resigning as President of the party, Latheef messaged a WhatsApp group with party members and thanked the members for their cooperation while he had been filling the post. He said in his message that he is resigning because he is unable to serve in the position at present.
While Latheef has resigned from the post, Democrats senior members Hussain Amru, Ali Azim and Mohamed Shifaz have switched to Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
The Democrats is a breakaway party formed after some members split from MDP due to rifts that rose in the run up to the 2023 presidential elections. At the time MDP had been split into two factions, one in allegiance to then President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and the other behind former President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed. The Democrats had been formed by the members supporting Nasheed.
