President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has today appointed former Minister of Finance Ahmed Munawwar to the post of Governor at central bank Maldives Monetary Authority.

Munawwar served as Advisor to the Minister of Finance Mohamed Shafeeq until July 22.

His letter of appointment was presented to him today by President Muizzu in a special ceremony held at the President's Office.

After the appointment, the President and the new MMA Governor held discussions regarding the current economic situation of the country.

The President's Office said that the President had urged Munawwar to work closely with other financial institutions.

The newly appointed Governor assured complete cooperation and support towards the Government's efforts to recover the economic situation of the country, the President's Office said.

Munawwar served as Minister of Finance during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen. Earlier, he worked in MMA from 1999 to 2014.

MMA Governor's position was last filled by Ali Hashim, who served as Minister of Finance during Maldivian Democratic Party's previous administration.

The Parliament advised President Muizzu to dismiss Hashim after Deputy Speaker of Parliament raised the issue claiming that Hashim had failed to fulfill his duties and offer counsel to the government at this time when the country is facing economic troubles.

The Parliament later recommended Ahmed Munawwar to the post, with the motion being passed in parliament yesterday through the votes of 78 MPs. While 85 MPs were in attendance during the vote, the remaining members abstained from voting.
