President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appealed to the parliament for counsel on dismissing Ali Hashim from the post of Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) Governor, and replacing him with Advisor at Ministry of Finance Ahmed Munawwar.
Parliament yesterday approved advising the President to dismiss Ali Hashim. Closely after that, the President's Office released a statement saying that the President had decided to dismiss Ali Hashim in accordance with the Parliament's decision.
The President's nominee for the post, Munavvar, has earlier served as Finance Minister during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen. He also worked at MMA previously.
At present, Munavvar is in the post of Advisor to the Finance Minister.
As per the MMA Act, the Governor must be appointed or dismissed by the President, but it has to be done so with the advice of the Parliament.
The Parliament has now sent the President's proposal to appoint Munavvar as Governor to the Public Accounts Committee for further review.
