Maldives to formulate a comprehensive plan to combat tobacco in the country.
The government has decided to develop a four-year comprehensive masterplan aimed at combating tobacco consumption in the Maldives, President's Office said yesterday.
The decision was made following recommendations by the Cabinet of Ministers following extensive deliberations during the most recent Cabinet meeting.
The masterplan will include additional measures alongside the enforcement of existing tobacco control laws and regulations, with the goal of achieving a permanent solution to tobacco use over the next four years.
According to the President's Office, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has requested the first draft of the masterplan to be presented at the Cabinet meeting scheduled for October, 27, 2024.
"The Cabinet’s recommendation emphasises the masterplan’s focus on promoting a smoke-free society. Key initiatives include empowering social workers, introducing incentives for non-smoking islands, and providing financial support for social activities on these recognised islands," the President's Office revealed.
Additionally, the President has instructed relevant authorities to ensure the availability of free smoking cessation programs at all health centres for individuals seeking assistance.
While this plan moves through the pipeline, Maldives has also banned vapes and electric cigarettes in the country, with the decision coming into effect in less than a month.
In a post on social media platfrom X, President Muizzu said that the import of all vape products and individual parts of vape devices is to be made illegal from November, 15, 2024. Additionally, the use, possession, production, sale, advertisement and distribution of all vape products will be banned from December, 15, 2024.
In addition, taxes imposed on tobacco products are also increasing by 50 percent, in a bid to reduce smoking in the community.
Necessary amendments to laws will be submitted to the Parliament this week, the government also said.
