Elections Commission reported a voter turnout of 6,275 people, accounting for 55.41 percent of eligible voters as of 4:00 p.m. yesterday.
Ruling party People's National Congress (PNC) secured nine out of 12 seats in the by-elections held yesterday for local councils and women's development committees.
According to provisional results, PNC won seats in Noonu Atoll Landhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll Hirimaradhoo, Baa Atoll Goidhoo, Baa Atoll Fehendhoo, Raa Atoll Innamaadhoo (two seats), Laamu Atoll Gan, Gaafu Alifu Atoll Kanduhulhudhoo, and Thaa Atoll Buruni.
Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) won seats in Noonu Atoll Miladhoo and Alifu Dhaalu Atoll Hangnaameedhoo. Meanwhile, independent candidates secured Haa Dhaalu Atoll Makunudhoo and Dhaalu Atoll Hulhudheli seats.
The by-elections were initially open for nominations for five local council seats and 28 women's development committee seats. However, 21 of these elections were uncontested, as only one candidate had submitted their nomination for each seat. Since all these candidates were from PNC, the party won all 21 seats.
Most by-elections since the new government took office have been won by government backed candidates.
