President pledges to address concerns over Thalassemia Centre

The government has begun working to resolve concerns raised by thalassemia patients and their families over services at the Thalassemia Centre following a protest last night.

President’s Office made the announcement after President Dr Mohamed Muizzu visited the centre today to hear grievances firsthand.

“The concerns expressed by families are now being addressed in consultation with the heads of relevant agencies, and all issues that can be resolved immediately will be dealt with,” a senior official from the President’s Office said.

Thalassemia patients and their families staged a protest near Maldives Blood Services (MBS) after a meeting with officials last night.

During his visit, the President inspected the centre’s facilities and spoke to families who were there for blood transfusions, assuring them that their concerns would be addressed without delay, the official said.

He also acknowledged that inadequate measures had been taken to resolve the centre’s problems in the past and pledged a to find solutions.

The President was accompanied by Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim and Finance Minister Moosa Zameer.

Among the key concerns raised by protesters were faulty filters that lead to blood wastage, with some transfusion packets becoming damaged in the process.
