President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said on Tuesday that health experts have predicted that Maldives will see a surge in Covid-19 cases within the next 3 weeks.

The President is currently on a tour to visit five islands in Noonu Atoll. After officially opening the harbour of Noonu Landhoo, he said that Maldivian health experts have been having discussions regarding the highly contagious variant Omicron, that has lead to a tsunami of cases globally.

The variant was recorded in Maldives on November 27.

"Health experts have said that Maldives will see Covid spread at high rates within the upcoming three weeks," he said in Dhivehi while giving his address in Landhoo.

"Because the new variant have already been detected in Maldives."

He said health experts recommend everyone be extremely vigilant and practice precautionary methods as before as well.

President will visit Maafaru, Landhoo, Manadhoo, Magoodhoo, and Holhudhoo island on this two day trip.

Covid positivity rate doubled since Omicron was detected

Health Protection Agency 's (HPA) statistics show that since Omicron has been detected in Maldives, the Covid positivity rate has doubled.

Maldives recorded the highest number of Covid cases within the last four months in a 24 hour period on Monday, with 242 positive cases.

As per the agency's daily statistics, 76 people had received a positive Covid result from the 3,820 samples that had been tested on the day Omicron was detected in Maldives. However, on Monday, 242 positive results were recorded from the 3,740 samples tested. These are positivity rates of 1.99 percent and 6.47 percent respectively.

This is an increase of 30 percent.

Maldives' attempts at administrating booster shots have been halted due to lack of available syringes even though the nation has enough Pfizer doses to increase the scale of its booster shot availability. Even though a majority of Maldives' population have received at least tow doses of the vaccines against Covid-19, experts believe booster shots greatly decrease the virus' effect on infected individuals.
