Maldives Police Service, on Saturday, confirmed that death threats against Commissioner of Police (CP) Mohamed Hameed were under investigation.

The police guaranteed that all cases involving death threats would be thoroughly investigated.

CP Hameed has recently come under public criticism concerning the case of the report published by Maldivian Democracy Network (MDN) which allegedly contradicted the tenets of Islam.

Criticizers highlight that since the Police Commissioner previously worked at the NGO, it could interfere with a proper investigation into the matter.

An individual that expressed anger over the lack of actions against MDN posted a picture online depicting Hameed being attacked with a sharp object.

In response to another tweet, the Police stated that Hameed was not involved with MDN while he was working with the police. It was further revealed that Hameed only worked with MDN for a short period of time.

MDN, an NGO promoting human rights and democracy in the country, was suspended over its 2015 report 'Preliminary Assesment of Radicalisation in Maldives'.

While several members of the public stated that suspension was insufficient as a punishment, the police have decided to summon MDN members for questioning.
