Zakat Fund of Maldives will provide financial aid for the bone marrow transplants of five thalassaemic children.
The recipients of this year's bone marrow transplants is departing to India on Thursday. The medical procedure will be conducted at Manipal Hospital in Bangalore, India.
While the Zakat Fund sponsors bone marrow transplants every year, a total of 27 thalassaemic patients have been treated.
Minister of Health Abdulla Ameen met the five children chosen for bone marrow transplants along with their families on Wednesday, and stated that efforts were underway to provide aid to more thalassemic patients in the future.
Families and donors are scheduled to accompany the children on the four-month trip to India. The Zakat Fund is spending MVR 900,000 on each child, while the National Social Protection Agency and Social Welfare Fund will cover any further expenses.
Director of Maldivian Blood Services (MBS), Niyaz Ahmed stated that the children would require intensive care during a one-year recovery period. Niyaz also noted that parents would play a crucial role within this time frame.
Ministry of Health and MBS established a system to provide convenient access to required treatment and facilities for 881 registered Thalassemic patients in Maldives.
