Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Engagement registered the 'Male' Tenants' Union' (MTU) on October 13.
According to MTU, the union was formulated to advocate for the rights of tenants as a result of the growing challenges faced by many in the congested and competitive real estate market of capital city Male', including exorbitant rent price as compared to the average income of a household.
While MTU is preparing to provide legal assistance to tenants, it is currently developing a campaign with parliamentarians to bring about policy level changes in the form of rent control.
Statistics indicate that 63 percent of the resident population in Male' live on rent. MTU stated that this large amount of individuals were left without government representation possibly due to the lack of a unionized body.
The organization urged tenants to join the union.
Male' is one of the most densely populated islands in the world.
