Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has held the closing ceremony of its apprenticeship programme on Thursday.

HDC said that all participants were awarded certificates, while the top scorers have now been appointed to jobs in the company.

Certificates to the 75 participants who completed the apprenticeship were presented by Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed.

An MQA Level 3 certificate was awarded to the participants of this apprenticeship programme, which was run in accordance with the guidelines for National Apprenticeship Programmes of the Maldives National Skills Development Authority.

The trainings of the programme were held in ten areas for a period of six months. Participants were allocated an allowance each month, which was arranged with the aid of the Economic Ministry.

Training areas include operating heavy vehicles, gardening, refrigeration and air condition mechanics, inventory management, computer hardware and networking, housekeeping, front office service, health and safety in construction, painting and decoration, as well as construction site supervision.

HDC said the main target of the programme is to provide a national level certification for youth who have not opted for a certain career path and provide wider employment opportunities for them.

The company further said this initiative would produce more capable and qualified locals to replace foreigners who are currently often engaged in these areas of work in the local workforce.

Speaking at the ceremony, HDC Managing Director Fazul Rasheed said that the company would continue to provide every possible cooperation towards the government's efforts to build and train capable youth.
