Some contenders of the Democrats Youth Branch's election has withdrawn their names due to dissatisfaction regarding the delay in result announcement and re-commencement of the elections that was invalidated due to rigging claims.
A few frustrated contenders of the inter-Democrats elections held last December has withdrawn their names due to the prolongment of the youth branch result announcement.
The concerns arose due to claims that the polling was rigged in response to the announced results indicating more votes were cast than eligible in some voting stations.
The Democrats party have made the decision to null the results of the two positions of these boxes after analyzing the complaints submitted as some voting stations had ballots issued to ineligible individuals. Furthermore, voting for these two posts is decided to be re-held as the results will be affected.
The Democrats had determined to hold the Young Democrats Leader Elections over 12 islands while the Deputy Leader’s elections were arranged to be held over 14 islands. Many members of the youth branch have expressed concerns as the elections to determine these positions remains yet to be conducted.
Among those concerned are Yusuf Shah Ahmed who had contended for the position of Young Leader and Fithura Mohamed who had competed for Deputy Young Leader.
In a statement to Mihaaru News, Yusuf Shah, who was involved in the party since its inception, said that his decision to withdraw his name was due to the two-month delay in announcing the results as well as the failure to hold the re-election in the determined islands.
“As this is greater than the interest of a single person, the Young Democrats do not wish to be impeded and remain in a deadlock situation,” he wrote in the letter sent to withdraw his name.
He said that he does not wish for the party’s youth branch to become a secondary body.
The second biggest concern of the candidates that withdrew their names was the exclusion of the Youth branch in the selection of the Democrat’s President’s Council.
The Democrats has not yet commented on the matter.
