Maldives National Defence Force assured on Tuesday night that the alert status of the country raised to 'Yellow Two' level at 1900hrs on December 24, was not due to an imminent threat.
Yellow alerts are issued when there is an increased or predictable threat to the security and sovereignty of the country.
MNDF's spokesperson Major Ibrahim Azim notified the media that the alert status was raised to increase proactive precautionary measures adding that security was heightened in airports as well.
"There are different protocols to follow when changing the alert status from normal", Azim stated.
According to a press release by MNDF on Tuesday, armed troops will operate in different areas of the country during the alert period, in addition to halting and inspecting marine vessels at sea.
Authorities urge for the public's full cooperation in the matter as MNDF is working to ensure the safety of the people.
Furthermore, MNDF expressed gratitude for the support of the public in conducting their responsibilities.
Although the military issued a 'Yellow two' status, Maldives Police Service announced that the institution was not at an alert status.
