Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) raised the alert status across the country on Tuesday and strengthened security measures.

According to a press release by MNDF, the alert status was raised to 'Yellow two' from 1900hrs and military personnel will operate in different areas with weapons.

Yellow alerts are issued when there is an increased or predictable threat to the security and sovereignty of the country.

During the alert period, military personnel will halt marine vessels and conduct inspections. Authorities urge for the public's full cooperation in the matter as MNDF is working to ensure the safety of the people.

Furthermore, MNDF expressed gratitude for the support of the public in conducting their responsibilities.

This alert comes at a time when government institutions are taking notable measures against the increasing extremism within society.

Recently, authorities released statistics to convey the seriousness of the issue, asking for the public's assistance in bringing the perpetrators to justice. According to these stats, there are approximately 1400 individuals who would not hesitate to kill for their beliefs.

In the fight against extremism, Maldives Police Service and MNDF conducted a special joint operation titled 'Asseyri' in Maduvvari, Raa Atoll, last week. Three arrests were made during the operation.
