President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has today ratified an amendment to the Legal Profession Act to exclude the Attorney General from the Executive Committee of the Bar Council.

The Bar Council's Executive Committee currently has nine members which include the Attorney General, the Council's President and Vice President elected from among lawyers, and six additional members.

According to the bill drafted by the Attorney General's Office and submitted to Parliament by ruling party People's National Congress (PNC) MP Hussain Shareef on behalf of the government, the Bar Council's Executive Committee will now consist of the Council's President, Vice President, and seven additional members. The Attorney General will no longer be included in this committee.

Attorney General Ahmed Usham has also expressed that he does not wish to be included on the Bar Council ExCo. The Bar Council will gain full autonomy once the Attorney General is removed from its Executive Committee, as proposed in the amendment to the Bar Council Act, the council stated.

The bill also includes the necessary amendment to the law to allow official agencies and registered educational institutions to affix their stamps of origin and conformity to documents issue.
