President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih declared on Sunday that traditional Maldivian medicine ‘Dhivehi-beys’ must be revived with modern resources and left to professionals in the field.

Inaugurating the National Symposium on Traditional and Alternative Medicine organised by the Ministry of Health, President Solih stated that olden Maldivian medicine progressed in the light of the medicinal techniques from the East and Arabian peninsula.

“But traditional Arabic medicine has reached new heights today. Therefore, ‘Dhivehi-beys’ must also be revived with the use of modern resources, science and technology,” said President Solih.

Noting that traditional medicine is related to both the body and spirit of people, he emphasised that it must be practised only by professionals.

Furthermore, the President stated that ‘Dhivehi-beys’ needed to be systematised, in order to identify those who require alternative medicine and the results of such treatments.

President Solih went on to highlight the spike in diseases related to lifestyle choices, noting the increasing cases of diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer in the recent history of Maldives.

“Changes in our lifestyle would create a healthy society. The sector for alternative medicine should be broadened in order to establish preventive measures,” said President Solih.

Moreover, President Solih stated that real progress comes with the progress of the people, and it can be brought about with progress in reasoning and ideology.
