The governments of Maldives and Japan on Thursday discussed the possibility of various new projects to combat climate change in the island nation.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, Minister Abdulla Shahid met with the Minister of Environment of Japan, Yoshiaka Harada.

The two diplomats discussed new projects to combat climate change in Maldives, in the areas of coastal protection, and establishment of water supply networks and sanitation mechanisms.

Shahid also hailed Japan's efforts in pushing for action against climate change in the international arena, and expressed gratitude for the Japanese government's continued support in building resilience and disaster risk reduction in Maldives.

Minister Harada in turn assured that Japan remained committed in its assistance to the island nation.

Foreign Minister Shahid was accompanied by Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer, Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel, Ambassador of Maldives to Japan Ibrahim Uvais, and officials of the foreign ministry on his ongoing official visit to Japan.
