The United Kingdom has warned its citizens of a possible terrorist attack on the Maldives.

In a travel advisory released by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the UK urged caution while travelling to the Maldives as it is feared that the country is possibly targeted for a terrorist attack.

“There’s a heightened threat of terrorist attack globally against UK interests and British nationals, from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria. You should be vigilant at this time.”

The advisory also highlighted that UK authorities have classified the Maldives as having a risk of Zika virus transmission. Hence, it urged travellers to be cautious on the matter as it might be difficult to receive efficient healthcare.

The Australian government has also urged their citizens to be cautious while travelling to the Maldives, referring to a possible terrorist attack.

Meanwhile, the government of the Maldives have created national policies on countering terrorism attacks via the National Counter Terrorism Center. The Ministry of Defence has assured that they are on alert for acts of religious extremism and terrorism.
