When the contract was initially signed, the Infrastructure Ministry at the time had said that the runway would be 1200 meters long. The project also included construction of the terminal building and establishment of other necessary facilities at the airport.

The MTCC Official said today that at present, work that remains pending include reclamation of the remaining land required for the airport and the finishing work of the terminal.

"That, too, will proceed at a fast pace now," they assured.

The major construction work on the terminal has already been completed.

The government states that Meemu Atoll, which currently has three resorts in operation, will see major development with the establishment of this airport.

MTCC is also undertaking a project of connecting Muli and Naalaafushi with a causeway, raising the chances of the atoll becoming an urban center in the future.
