Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives H.E. Wang Lixin said that they are preparing to resume direct flights between Maldives and China next month, which were suspended in 2020 due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

In an interview with Public Service Media (PSM), the ambassador said that Maldives is still the most popular destination among Chinese tourists and it is expected that they will soon resume travel to Maldives as the situation is improving

“I believe that the number of tourists and travelers traveling between Maldives and China will increase significantly in the near future,” the Ambassador said.

Prior to the outbreak, the Maldives had seen the largest tourist arrivals from China. However, tourist arrivals from the country had been suspended for the past two years due to the pandemic.

Currently, the largest number of tourists arrivals to the Maldives are from India, Russia and the UK.

The Maldives and China are celebrating their 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year. In the interview, the Ambassador said they are working with the Maldivian government to further strengthen bilateral relations. They are also working to increase aid to Maldives in the fields of health, environment, economy, agriculture and fisheries.
