Former Inter Milan midfielder Francesco Moriero has been appointed as the new coach of the Maldives national football team.

According to Italian media reports, the former Italian player who also played for Roma and Naples has agreed to sign a one-year contract with Football Association of Maldives (FAM). Another assistant is expected to sign with him for the national team.

Moriero, 52, last worked as a coach at Dynamo Tirana in Albania. His first experience abroad was at the Ivory Coast club, Africa Sports. He has worked in italy's second division and third division, Serie B and Serie E. He also coached Swiss club Lugano.

Maldives will be his first work in Asia and first National team to manage.

Moriero will be the third coach for the national team this year. Former coach Martin Kopman was dismissed from his post in August and handed over to Ali Suzain - an experienced local - until the end of the last SAFF Championship which he failed to win.

The Maldivian team will be competing with Moriero in the Mahinda Rajapaksa International competition to be held in Sri Lanka next month. In addition to Maldives and Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Seychelles will also compete in the competition.
