Minister of Environment Dr Hussain Rasheed Hassan, stated that “sacrifices have to be made...to achieve sustainable development”, at the 'UN Trade Forum: SDGs and Climate Change' on Monday.

Participating at the Trade Forum held in Geneva, Switzerland, he stressed that the Maldivian economy will be impacted by climate change as it is heavily reliant on the hospitality industry and the import market.

In order to address these issues, "a strong bond between the public and private sector is crucial, especially to attract foreign investments", said the minister.

Moreover, he highlighted the importance of economic diversification, in order to smoothen the transition to a low carbon economy.

The minister is attending the forum as part of a special envoy of President Ibrahim Mohamed Salih by special invitation from the Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Dr Mukhisa Kituyi.

This forum commenced on Monday and is scheduled to conclude on September 13. The meeting will explore the interconnection between trade, climate change and ocean economy under the lens of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially in Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
