The Magistrate Court of Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, on Tuesday granted a 15-day remand period for the man accused of sexually abusing a 9-year-old girl.
The spokesperson for Maldives Police Service confirmed that the 71-year-old man arrested for the crime, which took place on a southern island, was remanded. However, no further details were disclosed.
The mother of the child was formerly romantically involved with the suspect. Moreover, the girl's two brothers, aged 13 and 16, allegedly sexually abused her as well.
Authorities removed the child from her mother's care and placed her under the custody of relatives, following the case filed on May 10.
Since the case revolves around minors, Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services and the poolice have not disclosed any information that would reveal the minor's identities, including the island where the incident took place.
