11 arrested over Villingili bank heist, MVR14 mln recovered

Eleven people have been arrested in connection with the recent robbery at Bank of Maldives (BML) branch in Villingili, Gaafu Alifu Atoll.

Maldives Police Service's spokesperson revealed on Tuesday that of the seven suspects arrested on Monday, five are remanded for 15 days, and two for seven days. The remaining four suspects are three locals and one Bangladeshi who were arrested on Tuesday. Their remands are yet to be determined.

While the police have yet to disclose the total amount robbed from the bank, they revealed that MVR 14 million of the stolen money were found stashed in a washing machine inside an abandoned house. The cash included both Maldivian Rufiyaa and US Dollars.

Local media reports that the suspects include four individuals from one family and three from another, along with a Sri Lankan national. The latter is employed at a workshop and, according to reports, the police have also arrested the workshop's owner in relation to the case.

Neither the police nor BML have shared details of the heist. However, local media reports that the suspects had broken into the bank through its roof, and broke open the safes.
