Public Service Media (PSM) has stated that the presidential debate ahead of the upcoming elections was organised by Maldives National University (MNU) and has revealed that PSM does not play any role in the event.

Speaking to local news media ‘Mihaaru’, Managing Director of PSM Ibrahim Khaleel declared that the presidential debate among candidates ahead of the upcoming presidential elections slated for Septemeber 23 is hosted solely by MNU. Khaleel further added that the agreement signed between PSM and MNU dictates only for PSM to cover the presidential debate and provide a clean feed to other broadcastors.

MNU had earlier revealed that the university will be researching and preparing questions for both presidential candidates during the debate.

Whilst opposition coalition's presidential candidate and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) is yet to officially accept the invitation, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, on Sunday, accepted the invitation to the presidential debate.

A debate is to be held regarding the political party manifestos by the end of August, and later a debate between the presidential candidates in September ahead of the elections. However, the dates of the debates are yet to be announced.
