Former President Mohamed Nasheed declared Monday that incumbent President Abdulla Yameen has lost everything and called for his resignation.

In a tweet he posted regarding the motion of no confidence submitted against Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh, Nasheed said, “President Yameen has lost parliament, lost local council elections, lost the coalition that brought him to power. He has lost and should resign.”

In another tweet he thanked the lawmakers, parliamentary group leader of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the leaders of the joint opposition, and local tycoon and his adviser Abdulla Jabir.

According to an amendment made to parliament regulations by the ruling coalition recently, a minimum of 42 signatures are required to file a motion of no confidence against the parliament speaker and deputy speaker. The resolution submitted by the opposition Monday had 45 signatures, including 10 from lawmakers of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

This is the third no confidence motion submitted against Speaker Maseeh. The last motion was held in March this year which was failed by a majority of 48 votes against the motion. Amidst the chaos in the sitting, none of the opposition members took part in the vote which was taken via roll-call due to alleged defects in the parliament chamber's electronic voting portals.
