Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (MNPHI) has reported that occupancy in the 4,000 housing units will be possible by the end of 2024.

The units developed by Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) are currently under construction.

The ministry recently publicized the permanent list of recipients entitled to the housing units, which attracted significant criticism from the public with the main inquiry regarding the awarding system.

The ministry held a press conference on Tuesday, November 7 where the State Minister of MNPHI Akram Kamaluddin said that the units will be handed over to eligible recipients as they are completed.

"Developed under phases, all the units will be handed over by the end of next year," Akram, who is also the chair of the flat committee said.

Out of the 20,000 applications for the Gedhoruveriya housing scheme, 13,000 were held eligible for social housing.

From the eligible applicants, recipients with the highest scores will be entitled for the 4,000 units.

FDC-initiated housing project includes three-bedroom and two-bedroom units. From the applicants who applied for three-bedroom units, recipients scoring 76 points or more are entitled for these units while from the applicants who applied for two-bedroom units, the recipients scoring 73 points and above are entitled to the units.

However, the permanent recipients list has attracted public scrutiny and criticism with many questioning authenticity of the point system. Several claims were made that the government did not make efforts to fully assess the living conditions of all applicants as well.

The situation intensified on last Sunday, a day after the list was publicized, when several members of the public entered the premises of MNPHI to demand answers.

After public complaints, the ministry has made the applicants' points visible on the Gedhoruveriya portal on Wednesday, November 8.
