Visit Maldives commences 2 major marketing activities in China

Visit Maldives, on Tuesday, launched two major marketing activities in China, including the launching of Maldives Online Roadshow as well as an information portal for travel trade on WeChat.

According to Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), Maldives Online Roadshow will be held from November 30 till December 2.

The road show is divided into three sections, including a webinar on Maldives tourism reassuring the participating travel agents that Maldives is a relatively safe destination for their clients to visit, following the re-opening of outbound travel from China.

The roadshow also contains a section featuring and online exhibition which will be live from November 30 till the end of February, and another section for one on one meetings held from December 1 to 2.

MMPRC stated that Visit Maldives will be sharing up to date travel and product information with the top travel agents from China via the online exhibition, together with 11 tourism industry partners.

The scheduled one-to-one meetings will emphasise on marketing the safety standards put in place to ensure that Maldives is one of the safest destinations to travel to and that the geographical formation of the island nation further aids in this.

In addition, these meetings will also help to identify strategies to further improve the market performance and strengthen the presence of the destination within the market.

During the roadshow, Visit Maldives will also launch the China Travel Trade information portal, which is available on WeChat. WeChat is one of the most popular social media apps in China, which has over 1.2 billion monthly active users and is known to be one of the most important information hubs for Chinese travelers.

MMPRC noted that ​the main objective of the portal is to continue the efforts of rebuilding confidence in the destination and ​to maintain direct communication with the Chinese travel trade by sharing up to date information​.

Maldives reopened its borders to international passengers on July 15, after nearly four months since the state halted issuing on-arrival visas on March 27. Guesthouses were permitted to resume operations and kick start local tourism on October 15.

Despite the lifting of restrictions, Maldives has noted a significant reduction in tourist arrivals compared to pre-COVID figures.

However, Visit Maldives highlighted that arrivals had gradually increased every month following the reopening of borders and noted that figures were expected to peak in the coming days.

Earlier, Minister of Tourism Abdulla Mausoom also expressed hopes for the industry's recovery, estimating that 100,000 tourists would visit Maldives before the end of 2020. The tourism ministry expects a total of 500,000 arrivals for the year.
