Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Wednesday placed local island Kaashidhoo, Kaafu Atoll, under monitoring.

The decision was taken by the health agency after a "direct contact" of a local, who tested positive for COVID-19 from capital Male', travelled to the local island.

HPA confirmed on Twitter that the island was under monitoring until further notice, adding that all unauthorized entry and exit from the local island is now prohibited.

Maldives recorded its first confirmed case of COVID-19 from the capital city, Male', on Wednesday morning involving a local woman who presented to the flu clinic in Malé on April 14 after developing coronavirus-like symptoms.

In response, the Greater Male' region, including Malé City, Hulhumalé, Villimale, and Thilafushi, Gulhifalhu, remain under lockdown for 24 hours starting 1530 hrs on Wednesday.

Maldives now has 21 confirmed and five active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 16 recoveries.
