President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced on Monday that the enhanced Aasandhan coverage services extend to newborns with heart conditions, inclusive of assistance and support to the families.
While commemorating the ceremony held to at Dharubaaruge to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Tiny Hearts Maldives NGO, President Solih stated that National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) and Aasandha and working to resolve problems identified.
He also stated that the NGO would be consulted in their area of expertise when tackling issues within the social health insurance scheme.
Stressing that newborns with congenital heart defects are common worldwide, President Solih noted that many have unfortunately lost their lives to such conditions.
The President further highlighted that prior to Tiny Hearts of Maldives, many Maldivians were unaware that such heart conditions in newborns are a result of congenital heart conditions. He added that these issues were brought to the government's attention through the efforts of the NGO.
Praising the efforts of Tiny Hearts Maldives and the founders, President Solih said that over the past decade, thanks to the facilitation of early diagnosis measures, the lives of a resounding number of newborns were saved.
He assured that the government would work closely with non-profit organizations, to promote healthy lifestyles and wellness programmes conducted by all manner of civil society groups, for the benefit of the society.
Tiny Hearts of Maldives was established in the memory of Keyaan, the firstborn son of the NGO's founders Ali Muaz and Fathimath Hishmath Faiz. He was born with a congenital heart condition, that eventually led to his untimely passing at the mere age of two and a half months.
