Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) members of parliament criticized the government's move to dismiss Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) Governor Ali Hashim, arguing that the decision attempts to shift blame for the country's economic management issues on the Governor.

During the parliamentary debate on recommending Governor Hashim's removal to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, MDP Parliamentary Group Leader and South Hithadhoo South MP Ibrahim Nazil described the move a "grim day" in Maldives' constitution's history.

MP Nazil contended that replacing the Governor would not resolve the government's economic management problems, stating, that the government would not be able to manage the economy even with the "appointment of three additional Governors" to the post.

"A budget was passed and handed over to the incoming government. They did not know how to manage it. Which is why they are trying to blame someone now."

Maradho MP Ahmed Didi described the dismissal as the start of government efforts to exert control over independent institutions.

The MP noted that the government was dissatisfied that the Governor was not adhering to the Ministry of Finance instead of the Ministry following the Governors counsel.

"Some members said this morning that the President believes in empowering independent institutions, but this is something which opposes this claim," MP Didi said.

Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Gafoor Moosa defended the previous government's economic policies during the pandemic, arguing that printing money had become necessary and the move was sanctioned by the parliament.

He emphasized that the tourism sector had generated significant revenue before the current administration came into power and attributed the economic issues to increased recurrent expenditure.

Following the debate, the parliament passed a motion recommending Governor Hashim's removal to President Muizzu, with only nine opposition MDP members voting against it.
