Cancer accounts for 17 percent of all deaths in the Maldives, Health Protection Agency (HPA) has said, referring to the statistics of the World Health Organization (WHO).
In a statement issued on World Cancer Day, the disease is recognized as the second leading cause of death globally. Approximately 10 million people succumb to cancer each year, with 40 percent of these cases attributed to lifestyle and unhealthy habits, as highlighted in the statement.
Similarly, in the Maldives, cancer ranks among the top three causes of death. The WHO estimates for 2020, cancer contributes to 17 percent of annual deaths in the country.
"We are actively engaged in the establishment and digitalization of the cancer registry as part of our comprehensive initiatives to prevent and control the disease," the statement emphasized.
Since 2019, initiatives have been implemented to ensure that cancer patients in the hospital registry adhere to the specified eligibility criteria.
