The Maldives is participating in this year’s event of France’s largest travel and tourism fair, the International French Travel Market (IFTM), to promote and expand its tourism industry.

In a statement released Tuesday, Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) confirmed the nation’s official participation in the travel fair which is being held in French capital Paris from Tuesday to Friday. Promoting the archipelago at IFTM are representatives of MMPRC and 12 other firms of the Maldives’ tourism sector.

According to the corporation, the Maldives’ delegation received a stand of 60 square metres at the fair for its activities. The Maldives’ stand is also being promoted and marketed at IFTM via adverts, banners and a magazine regarding the fair.

The annual IFTM began 38 years ago and is visited by the most prominent tour operators and travel agents of France. This year’s fair features 492 stands representing 1,560 travel and tourism brands from around the world, which is an increase of 30 percent from the previous year.

France is among the top ten markets for the Maldives’ tourism industry, but it has been on a decline for the past three years. In an effort to improve numbers, MMPRC had earlier established a Public Relations company in France to promote the Maldives with activities such as the road show held last May at various French cities.

Total 42,024 tourists from France had visited the Maldives last year.
