State lawyer Ahmed Nashid, on Tuesday, said in Supreme Court that the discovery of former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb's DNA on the pistol found in former Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim's residence would impact his 11-year jail sentence.

Nazim was sentenced for 11 years by the Criminal Court on March 26, 2015, over illegal weapon possession. A pistol along with three bullets was found in his residence.

In 2016, the police confirmed that the pistol found had traces of Adheeb's DNA on it. According to Nashid, initial proceedings at the Criminal Court had already concluded by that time.

While the former Defense Minister also appealed his cases at both the high court and the civil court, his lawyers could not submit the DNA analysis as evidence at that time either as the court's registrar had dismissed the case.

This is the first hearing of the appeal from Nazim to review his sentence in court.

Nazim's lawyer, Noor Al Salam mounted a defence stating that the pistol and three bullets were not proven to belong to Nazim.

The police were unable to find Nazim's fingerprints or DNA on the weapons and the bag they were stored in.

Noor Al Salam further claimed that the case was a calculated move by Adheeb and former Police Commissioner Hussain Waheed to ruin Nazim's political career.

Nashid refuted this claim and said that no evidence or testimonial of Nazim being framed was presented at court.

The case was presided over by Judge Adam Mohamed Abdulla, Judge Abdulla Arif and Judge Abdul Ghanee Mohamed.
