President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has pledged to establish better resources at the surf point in Thanburudhoo, Kaafu Atoll, along with an international standard racing track in Villimale 2.

Speaking at a campaign rally in the suburb of Villimale on Saturday night, the president hailed the youth who achieve great results, on international levels, in sports that are not commonly played in Maldives.

Acknowledging the talents and skills of Maldives' growing population of surfers, President Yameen vowed that all the necessary facilities and resources will be established at Thanburudhoo over the next five years.

The president also noted the increasing popularity of racing, and that Maldivians are now venturing into regional racing competitions. He pledged to develop an international standard racing track within the next five years should he be re-elected, under the mega housing project of Villimale 2 that his government plans to achieve by reclaiming Fushidhiggaru and Gulhifalhu.

The president went on to declare that sports were one thing capable of uniting all Maldivians across political differences.

"Surely when the Maldives National Football Team returns, there won't be any [political] colours or ideologies. We shall all raise our hands to congratulate the Maldivian team. Sports know no political boundaries," he said, referring to the Maldives' triumph at the SAFF Suzuku Cup final on Saturday night.

Stating that sports were indicative of Maldivians' lasting patriotism, President Yameen assured that the opportunities in local favourite football, are also available in other sports.
