The joint-opposition's presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) on Sunday pledged to complete the social housing flats for Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and Maldives Police Service.

Speaking on a program broadcast by local television channel Raajje TV late Saturday, Ibu said that it has been five years since President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom promised flats for Police and MNDF. However, none of those flats have been completed.

Ibu claimed to be aware of the amount of money spent on these flats, stating that up to two years of advance payments have been deducted from some officers' salaries.

He vowed to complete the flats within one year into the opposition's administration. He added that those who were given assurance of flats would be able to start living there with their families.

Ibu had previously promised to provide social housing for all Maldivians, particularly those residing in capital Male, if the opposition won the elections.

He added that their manifesto will detail how his government aims to resolve the social housing issue faced by many in the country.

The project to develop flats for Police and MNDF was awarded to a Thai company, Island Expert. Although six 14-storey towers were planned to be built in the reclaimed suburb of Hulhumale, not much work has been underway yet.
