After the crew of an Iranian vessel that was suspected of carrying drugs set their own boat ablaze and attempted to flee after it had run aground a reef, packages believed to contain drugs had drifted ashore in Molhadhoo in Haa Alif atoll, the island's council reported Saturday.

Council President Mohamed Nisham said that the packages have since been handed over to the police.

While a councillor had previously told Mihaaru that US dollars also washed up on the beach of Molhadhoo, Nishan later refuted the claim.

"We were not aware of any dollars washing ashore. The police did not say that they found money," Nishan said.

On Thursday, the crewmen set fire to their own boat and jumped in to the sea in lifejackets, when the police began to approach to rescue them. While the police has not officially given any statements on the incident, it has said that substances that are believed to be drugs was found near the boat.
