President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has thanked outgoing president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for his decision to shift former president Abdulla Yameen home.
Dr. Muizzu said that president Solih made the decision in the best interest of the nation.
After the two met at the President's Office, Dr. Muizzu said that president Solih made the decision after the Maldivian public had chosen the next president.
"Prioritization of the nation's best interest is the best option for everyone in their effort for collective progress and peace. Today, we must uphold the nation's best interest before our own personal motives," Dr. Muizzu said.
"This truly is joyous, and the decision is in the best interest of the majority of the people. We want justice for him [Yameen]," Dr. Muizzu said.
President Solih released the imprisoned former president to his home after Dr. Muizzu had made the request on Saturday evening, September 30.
The former president was shifted home on Sunday, and thousands of his supporters and well wishers had gathered in front of his residence to rejoice in Yameen's release from Maafushi Prison.
The former president thanked supporters who gathered near his residence and had taken the time to greet some of them.
