President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has assured he will remain committed in the continued efforts for democratic reform, highlighting he will play his part to hold the government accountable.

The outgoing president focused on the importance of an opposition party in a democratic society.

At the first press conference after his defeat in last Saturday's runoff election, president Solih responded to a journalist's query, emphasizing that he will remain in the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), his party.

He also said there is still significant room for improvement in the ongoing efforts for an ideal democratic sovereignty, and added that he will commit his time towards reform work.

President Solih further said that his decision for retirement from his political career was in case he was re-elected for a second term. He emphasized that his current focus is on strengthening the MDP.

He added that he will make a decision about the future of his political career only after achieving his objective in the current ruling party.

"I will remain in MDP. I will work on strengthening MDP with the party's leadership, and will not stand idly by to see the party's ruin," president Solih said.

President Solih said he believed he governed justly in the past five years, but added that he respected the decision made by the Maldivian citizens in this year's election.

He assured that work has commenced for the new government's transition.
