Police removed the flag and logo of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) from the office of PPM’s ousted leader, Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, late Friday against which the latter has vowed legal action.

Under a Civil Court, Police had ordered the former PPM office to take down the ruling party’s flag and logo from its premises before 6:00 p.m. Friday. The order read that as the court has handed over PPM’s control to its advisor, incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, the operation of another office under the name of party leader using PPM’s logo and flag to hold party meeting and activities violates the Civil Court’s verdict.

The staff of the former PPM office did not act upon the order and Police took action after the deadline passed.

Following the police raid, Former President Maumoon has vowed to take the matter to court. He tweeted that the building, which is leased to his name, was raided without permission and, hence, he would sue those responsible.

The former president is currently on a personal visit to India.

Following the political fall-out between Maumoon and his half-brother President Yameen that split PPM into two factions, the Maldives’ judiciary had handed over party control from its leader Maumoon to President Yameen. While Former President Maumoon had refused to recognise the court order and held party councils and meetings with his faction of the divided ruling party, he was last Monday terminated as a member of PPM.
