The parliamentary group of the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has begun discussions on Wednesday to remove Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla from her post.
Twelve Members of Parliament, including Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla have resigned from MDP on Wednesday. This decision came after Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim, who is a supporter of Speaker Mohamed Nasheed's faction "Fikurrege Dhirun," was expelled from the party.
The leader of the MDP's parliamentary group, Mohamed Aslam, confirmed to Mihaaru News that discussions were underway to submit a no-confidence motion against Eva Abdulla, aiming to remove her from the position of Deputy Speaker.
Mihaaru News reported that even before Eva had left the party, enough signatures had been collected to submit a motion of no-confidence against her. The current discussion is focused on whether or not they should proceed with filing the motion.
While MDP still has over 50 MP's in parliament, the no-confidence motion against the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker will be passed if it receives at least 43 votes.
