Cath Lab to open in Addu city soon: Vice President Faisal

Vice President Faisal Naseem said a Cath lab will soon be opened at the Equatorial Hospital in Addu city.

Speaking at the "Maldives Brain and Spine Conference 2022" organized by ADK hospital he said that work is underway to improve health services in islands and special priority is given to increase the number of specialists in various fields.

Regional hospitals in various areas have been converted to tertiary level and new services have been introduced. Among which, Cath lab is available at the Equatorial Hospital in Addu city to treat heart problems. This is the first such lab to be built outside the the Greater Male' area.

The Cath lab was opened in 2016 at the government's main hospital, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). The facility mainly performs angioplasty and angiography.

Vice President Faisal said he is giving special priority to producing professionals in the field to strengthen the health sector. More than 70 students are pursuing their higher education in medicine on government scholarships and about 800 students are studying nursing.

He said the private sector plays an important role in improving the nation's health sector. The Vice President thanked ADK for its efforts to take the health sector to a new level.

The Vice President's speech highlighted the biggest health problem facing the country. He said non-communicable diseases are increasing in Maldives at an alarming rate and adopting a healthy lifestyle is required to solve this.

The conference, attended by neurologists across the globe will discuss new findings in the field of neuroscience.
